In the brief years I knew Danny I was lucky enough to be able to save for posterity an example of his reading list and taste in literature. What follows barely does justice to the giant of a mind that he was and the person – had he lived – I would count among my favourite people and dearest friends. However in this current and new situation it is fundamental to give his memory the due recognition that it deserves by highways and byways. The three book covers below are the same as the ones of the actual books Dan lent me.

At the time my developing mind was able to consume A Brief History of Time and Iacocca but it would be two short decades and more before I eventually added Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance to my memories of “Danny the Champion of the World.”

As the world now stands in 2023 Iacocca has been overtaken by Elon Musk – the world’s sweetheart and favourite punchbag; And Stephen Hawking is years dead.

A final note – the good the bad and the ugly – Dan had a wicked sense of humour and I recall many a joke that can’t be politely written here.
